IIW INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON WELDING AND JOINING – July 17th
Metal Additive Manufacturing – Materials, Processes and Component Performance
Metal additive manufacturing (MAM) revolutionizes production by building parts layer by layer from 3D model data, using metal powders or wires. Key materials include steels, aluminium and titanium alloys as well as nickel-based superalloys. Common processes, such as Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) and Directed Energy Deposition (DED), utilize an energy source like arc, plasma, laser or electron beam to melt and fuse the material.
This approach allows for the creation of components with complex geometries and customized microstructures, often resulting in high-performance, lightweight. While AM offers significant design flexibility and reduced material waste, the resulting components may exhibit potential issues like anisotropy or micro-porosity, which often require post-processing (e.g., heat treatment) to optimize mechanical properties such as ductility and strength.
